Simple Curtains - the quick and dirty

Window treatments can really dress-up a room and I love creating a color palette around them. You can buy your own curtains but sometimes you have a window that doesn’t quite fit the “regular” size of curtains you will find in the stores. I have done a simple window treatment yet it is part of the current fad and fashion. Many times you can find fabrics on sale or get a coupon to help. You can do a curtain with a regular cotton fabric or you can use specialty window treatment fabrics found in most fabric stores. I have used both but for my daughter’s room I just used a simple cotton fabric.

If you are not much of a sewer, no need to worry. All you need to be able to do is sew a straight line! You will measure the length of your window, and add 3 inches for the seam. For the width, depending on how many gathers you want, you will either double or one and a half the width, and then divide by two. You will end up with two rectangles (remember you will need two curtains for them to come together in the middle). I lined my fabric with a darker shade to keep out the light but you don’t have to.

On the sides of the fabric, fold it over twice to create a ½ inch seam and sew down the sides. Then fold over a 1 inch hem for the top, and sew. And sew a 2 inch hem for the bottom. That is all you do! You are going to hang the curtains on the curtain rod with clips. So simple and yet so stylish! That was the quick and dirty low-down but here is a video with more detail. Happy sewing!
