As I mentioned in an earlier post, we spent a lot of time working on our kitchen to get it up to par. When we first moved in, I was surprised to find that the existing sink didn’t have a garbage disposal in it! I couldn’t remember the last time I lived in a place that didn’t have a garbage disposal so I was very shocked to not see one there! In the past we also had some garbage disposals that were disappointing, and it almost seemed like it would have been better if we didn’t have them at all! But when I really thought about it, a garbage disposal-for me-would always be a necessity.

Since we have had some disposals that were “weak sauce” (as my husband would say) in the past, we wanted to make sure that we would get one that had enough power, that would last us for the years to come, and wouldn’t break the kitchen budget. After searching around town and comparing prices on the internet, we were able to find an Insinkerator Badger 5 disposal. Most disposals that are installed in homes only have a 1/3 horse power. The Badger 5 has a ½ horse power making it more powerful than the average disposal on the market! The many reviews that we read about this model convinced us to get it!

When we asked about it around town, many of the local supply houses highly recommended this brand and specific model. We asked some of the contractors in town and they also said how reliable the disposal is and that many of them own one themselves. After hearing so many good things about one product, how could we even consider other products? Well, we did consider some of the other brands, since they were a little less expensive. When it came to the long term reliability, however, the common consensus was that an Insinkerator brand disposal was the best choice and would save us money in the long run (since it wouldn’t have to be replaced every few years).

We purchased the disposal and had it installed, and once the entire kitchen was complete, I couldn’t wait to start using all of the new features it had! After cleaning some messy dishes after one particularly messy meal, the water in the kitchen sink was draining slowly. I turned on the disposal, not knowing what to expect (first-time buyer’s anxiety-I guess), and I couldn’t believe how fast all of the water and food went down the drain! I had never seen a disposal work so well and so fast!

In the weeks to follow, I found myself allowing certain things to go down the drain that I wouldn’t have trusted my past disposals to get rid of! I was worried that certain things (such as chicken fat and broken egg shells) wouldn’t get broken down fully and leave a stinky-diaper smell in the sink, since it had happened before. Not with this new disposal! It could take just about any punch thrown at it!
